Good.. but should be cheaper., Monday, 13 October 2008 I paid about $220+tax online for this one. I have to say I am impressed with the Canon's USM system... and a relatively fast auto focus. I havent had a single time when the subjet was out of focus because of the len's mistake. It is pretty sharp around f5.6 all through the focal range.. mostly within 28-80mm range. I also recently bought a 50mm II f1.8 Canon fixed lens.. and to my surprise, the 50mm one is sharper than this lens at almost all f settings for the same focal length. To sum up: Pros: - A good general purpose Canon branded lens. 28-105mm is a decent focal range for starters. - USM is great. - AF is good.. mostly accurate. - Light weight, not bulky in size. - Decently sharp throughout most of the range. Cons: - Colors not as vibrant as the 50mm II 1.8 lens for the same settings... images almost always needs post processing. - Not as sharp as the 50mm lens for same other settings. - Should be cheaper. My argument being: the only two things that make it better than the fixed 50mm lens are: (1) a wider focal range (2) USM. I dont give a da*n to the build quality if the image quality isnt good. So my recommendation: try the Canon 50mm II f1.8 lens first.. it is under 100 bucks, will work great in low light, and will set a good benchmark. The 28-105mm is great for its flexible range and the decent sharpness and USM, but 50mm beats it in image quality anyday in my opinion.

Excellent for its price, Monday, 13 October 2008 I have to say I am impressed with Canon's USM system... and a relatively fast auto focus. I havent had a single time when the subjet was out of focus because of the len's mistake. It is pretty sharp around f5.6 all through the focal range.. mostly within 28-80mm range. To sum up: Pros: - A good general purpose Canon branded lens. 28-105mm is a decent focal range for starters. - USM is great. - AF is good.. mostly accurate. - Light weight, not bulky in size. - Decently sharp throughout most of the range. Cons: - Colors are not very bright or vibrant.. but a little post processing is all it needs. Final notes: The 28-105mm is great for its flexible range and the decent sharpness and USM... I have used it for everything from semi-macros to portraits to landscapes to long exposure shots at night to birds. And the build is professionally solid. Worth the money!!

Definately a sturdy piece of glass, Sunday, 18 May 2008 I was at a family gathering and was in the midst of switching lenses when the stupid family dog squeezed between me and and the chair behind me, knocking me off balance enough to drop my 28-105. It fell about four feet and landed front-side down onto the concrete porch. After recovering from my heart-attack, (and completely missing the moment I was transferring to my telephoto for) I reattached it to my camera and continued to take another hundred or so photos. That was about 6 months and 3k photos ago. It's still going and taking great photos, though it doesn't zoom as smoothly as it once did. I guess that's the price for my stupidity in conjunction with idiot dogs.
