Canon's Third Try on a 18-55 Kit Lens!, Sunday, 23 November 2008 For those that are unaware this is actually Canon's third version of a 18-55 kit lens. The first lens was your basic 18-55 EF-S 1:3.5-5.6 (the lens I got with my XTi). Next came the same lens, but with a USM motor (very limited availability, probably because Canon had the IS version in the works). The third version is the 18-55 EF-S 1:3.5-5.6 with IS (image stabilization). So far, I have been very satisfied with this lens as I have used it to replace the 18-55 kit lens that originally came with my XTi. The IS really helps to keep images sharp when using the camera for hand-held shots only! Don't use the IS when your camera is mounted on a tripod! The lens is not much larger than the original 18-55 kit lens, so this is really a good upgrade mainly because of the IS if you owned the previous kit lens. My only beefs with this lens are I wish it had the quieter & quicker USM (ultra-sonic motor) and had full-time focusing (featured on other Canon lenses where you can manually focus without switching the auto/manual switch). I also wish the front lens wouldn't rotate during focusing so I could use a polarizer filter with it. However, for the low price of this lens you really can't complaint too much! My only concern is will Canon come out with a 18-55 lens again (a fourth version?) & add the USM motor? Yeah, maybe Canon will come out with a fourth version of the 18-55 lens that will be available with newer, entry-level DSLR's in the future that will probably be called the Canon Digital Rebel XRi & XR (after the XTi/XT & XSi/XS). For now, this lens is a welcome addition to my lens collection that I'm glad to use!

For the money, it needs to be in your bag!, Tuesday, 18 November 2008 I'd have to give this thing two thumbs up. For speed. For weight. For image quality. Definitely one to keep in the camera bag.

Good bvut not the best, Thursday, 02 October 2008 The new product is o.k. but still has some problems at maximum range, for instance at 18mm or 55mm. It is hard to get a 'gentle' setting at these ranges. Otherwise this lens is very handy and gives you the freedom to have a high definition camera set with low weight and small space in your bag. I can recommend the lens.

Great lens with great improvements, Sunday, 21 September 2008 It's made a huge difference in the color and clarity of my photographs. The colors are gorgeous, great contrast, and very sharp. The Image Stabilization is awesome. Shooting in very low light, without a tripod is a breeze now. I haven't noticed any distortion even in bright sunlight. The lens body is made of plastic, but that makes it nice and light in my view - not too heavy to pack around. This lens is definitely not of professional quality, as the price would indicate, but for the amateur photographer or someone on a budget this is a great lens. If you're willing to shop around, you can even find it for around $100!

go get it!, Thursday, 18 September 2008 I have a rebel XTi and had a tamron 28mm-80mm lens but was not getting sharp enough pictures with it. This lens has since become my no.2 lens (No.1 is still my 50mm f1.8 beauty). It captures colors in great detail and the pictures are 'bright'. I wouldn't go into technical details since it has already been covered in a lot of reviews which I found very useful to make my selection. So please go over them. The place where I use them the most are indoor parties and events where the 18mm focal length comes in very useful and gives some great wide angle stuff as compared to the 50mm which has a much narrower range. I got it for $170 and its a great buy at that price. I'm loving it.
