This review is for; Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS SLR Lens

For those that are unaware this is actually Canon's third version of a 18-55 kit lens. The first lens was your basic 18-55 EF-S 1:3.5-5.6 (the lens I got with my XTi). Next came the same lens, but with a USM motor (very limited availability, probably because Canon had the IS version in the works). The third version is the 18-55 EF-S 1:3.5-5.6 with IS (image stabilization).

So far, I have been very satisfied with this lens as I have used it to replace the 18-55 kit lens that originally came with my XTi. The IS really helps to keep images sharp when using the camera for hand-held shots only! Don't use the IS when your camera is mounted on a tripod! The lens is not much larger than the original 18-55 kit lens, so this is really a good upgrade mainly because of the IS if you owned the previous kit lens. My only beefs with this lens are I wish it had the quieter & quicker USM (ultra-sonic motor) and had full-time focusing (featured on other Canon lenses where you can manually focus without switching the auto/manual switch). I also wish the front lens wouldn't rotate during focusing so I could use a polarizer filter with it. However, for the low price of this lens you really can't complaint too much!

My only concern is will Canon come out with a 18-55 lens again (a fourth version?) & add the USM motor? Yeah, maybe Canon will come out with a fourth version of the 18-55 lens that will be available with newer, entry-level DSLR's in the future that will probably be called the Canon Digital Rebel XRi & XR (after the XTi/XT & XSi/XS). For now, this lens is a welcome addition to my lens collection that I'm glad to use!

I purchased this lens two days ago, and since I have already I've pulled about 200-400 images through that thing. Though it's not a "wide-angle" lens, it certainly clearly captures down at 17mm and it's pretty darn wide.

I'd have to give this thing two thumbs up. For speed. For weight. For image quality.

Definitely one to keep in the camera bag.

I bought this lens to replace the original kit lens of my XTi. Based on reviews, it is supposed to be optically better than its predecessor. I like the IS and the pictures are somewhat sharper than with the previous lens. It was inexpensive and I'll be selling the other lens on Ebay so overall, I'm glad I made the investment. If it was more expensive, I don't think I would have switched.

The 28-135 IS lens came with my Cannon EOS 40D camera. Good lens, but somewhat heavy. Also, did not provide enough of a wide angle. I take mostly outdoor landscape pictures and most of them are taken when I am on vacation. This 18-55 IS lens is very lightweight and produces very good pictures. After purchasing it, I am finding that I use it about 75% of the time and the 28-135 lens that came with the camera only about 25% of the time.

This lens is the best kit lens on the market right now, and likely best standard zoom under $300. It has no obvious flaws, takes sharp pictures, and has fantastic image stabilization. I can take 1/10 shutter speed and even the occasional 1/4 with sharp results. Build quality is not like a $500 lens, but this was designed for the Rebel series. It seems to have a similar quality and finish to my Rebel XS and I don't think it feels "cheap". There are more detailed reviews and tests elsewhere on the internet, so I won't spout off for 2 pages. But, the bottom line is that this is a great lens, especially for the money, and will serve you well for general photography. If you need a longer zoom too, I would recommend the canon 55-250 IS to mate with this lens.

I've owned the old 18-55 non-IS and this new IS version. I purchased it when I first bought my 40D. You can't beat the bang for the buck for this new version, and the lens gives you a nice wide angle zoom range. On the downside, the lens can feel a bit in build, and has noticeable distortion at 18mm. The next step up with this zoom range and IS is the 17-85IS which is at least $300 more than this lens so this is a good bargain! For anyone who has owned the older non-IS version of this lens, let me assure you that it is a nice step up!

I bought this lens to replace a damaged Canon EF-S 18-55mm without image stabilizer.
The new product is o.k. but still has some problems at maximum range, for instance at 18mm or 55mm. It is hard to get a 'gentle' setting at these ranges. Otherwise this lens is very handy and gives you the freedom to have a high definition camera set with low weight and small space in your bag.
I can recommend the lens.

I purchased this lens for my Canon Digital Rebel XT. I opted not to purchase the original kit lens due to the bad reviews. However recently I took another look and I decided to purchase this lens based on the improvements Canon made. It was definitely worth the wait!

It's made a huge difference in the color and clarity of my photographs. The colors are gorgeous, great contrast, and very sharp. The Image Stabilization is awesome. Shooting in very low light, without a tripod is a breeze now. I haven't noticed any distortion even in bright sunlight. The lens body is made of plastic, but that makes it nice and light in my view - not too heavy to pack around.

This lens is definitely not of professional quality, as the price would indicate, but for the amateur photographer or someone on a budget this is a great lens. If you're willing to shop around, you can even find it for around $100!

This lens is a great addition to my canon lens collection.
I have a rebel XTi and had a tamron 28mm-80mm lens but was not getting sharp enough pictures with it.

This lens has since become my no.2 lens (No.1 is still my 50mm f1.8 beauty). It captures colors in great detail and the pictures are 'bright'.
I wouldn't go into technical details since it has already been covered in a lot of reviews which I found very useful to make my selection. So please go over them.

The place where I use them the most are indoor parties and events where the 18mm focal length comes in very useful and gives some great wide angle stuff as compared to the 50mm which has a much narrower range.

I got it for $170 and its a great buy at that price. I'm loving it.

For the price, this is a great lens and most non-professional photographers would be satisfied with it. Positives: the optical quality is good (not among the very best or the worst, but definitely solid performance for smaller than poster size prints, and much better than the original non-IS version of this lens), the stabilization feature works very well (during a recent trip to the local botanical gardens I tried quite a few shots with and without; in the indoor and darker parts of the garden I was able to get sharp photos with the stablizer on but they were all blurry from slow shutter speeds when it was off); it focuses surprisingly close (not quite macro, but sufficient for most flower/butterfly type photos); reasonable build quality for the price (made of high-quality plastic; zoom and focus are fairly smooth). Negatives: relatively small maximum aperture; limited zoom range. Also, compared to the original non-IS version of this lens, the IS version is of similiar build quality but the optics are sharper, the IS is useful, and the zoom mechanism feels smoother.
