If you need a lens for low light condition, this lens will do a great job. It absorbs more light in faster shutter speeds due to the wide aperture (f1.8). This fast lens is also good for "freezing time in a photograph" (not blurry images) and for portraits. The depth of field control is unbelievably amazing! Don't think twice! Get this cheap yet powerful lens now!

For $125 there is not a better lens out there for portrait photography. It is not the sharpest lens out there, don't get me wrong it is sharp but does have a soft sharpness. DOF is great, size is great, low light shots inside now possibly with no flash and low ISO. Bought it because of the positive reviews on Amazon and am very happy to have this lens in my collection now. I am a novice shooting with a D90 and have had amazing results so far with this lens. Fast lens with amazing low light capabilities. Would highly recommend this lens to anyone shooting a lot of indoor shots.

When I bought my Nikon D80, the lenses that came with it were the 18-55mm and 55-200mm, but until I bought this lens I hadn't realized I was missing out on so much better pictures! Basically I bought the lens because it was the cheapest one I could find, but only after reading all the reviews and tech specs. I like this lens a lot, and think that it should come standard with the nikon cameras. The only thing I don't like about it is sometimes the Automatic focus acts strangely, but I like using it on Manual anyways. Also recommend if you buy any lens that you keep a clear filter on it.

this is an excellent intermediate lens. it's fast, sharp and awesome. on my d200, its a 75mm equivalent on a 35mm sensor. this is the perfect length for head-and-shoulders portraits. i bought it on a whim at a local new brunswick nj camera shop, and haven't taken it off since.

before this, i used a 1976 nikon 50mm f/2, produced at the height of the nikon vs. canon arms race. once i adjusted electronic aperture controls, it was smooth sailing.

look no further than this lens for low light amateur photography.

Its handy, light weight and a fast lense.. pixs at 1.8f is pretty good, but the sharpest ones could come out from 2.8f aperture. It is great lense if you photograph inside, with the little light you can get some great pictures.. AF is amazing, it is fast and sharp! I use it with D90 and by the time you half press the shutter bigno ! it focus!

certainly not a pro-portrait lense, but this little boy can sure surprise you with the outcome.. If you have kids and would like to capture some happy moments while they play then you got to hook this lense to your cam, it captures fast and well exposed pictures inside with very little light... it def. worths that 120 buckss!

Enjoy!

I'm just a beginner and own a Nikon D60 with both the 18-55mm wide angle kit lens as well as a 50-200mm zoom lens. I added this lens for the fact that to me, it combines the benefits of both those lenses in one, at an excellent price point. I can take photos that have shallow depth of field and I can take them without having to use the zoom lens while not having to be 2568974 ft away from my subject. Granted this lens will not work in all scenarios, but for a situation where I'm in close proximity to my subject but am looking for that portrait effect, this is FABULOUS. I read that some people had trouble fitting this lens on their D60 but I've had absolutely no problems with it. The size is so compact (smaller than my 18-55mm kit lens for sure) that I'm pretty confident this is the lens I'll be keeping on my camera majority of the time from now on. Yes, it does not auto focus on the D60. But I like the creativity that's allowed with having to manually focus the image. All in all, I'm VERY happy with the lens. I recommend it hands down.

I use this lens all the time, it rarely comes off. Very inexpensive but the picture quality and DOF are better then some more expensive lens. No zoom but it you just need to be ok with getting close to your subject. Worth every penny!!

bought this Lens for my Nikon D5000, I was afraid that it might not behave in accordance to the caliber of the D5000 body, but I was amazed to see the results. This is a nikkor lens manufactured especially for Nikon DSLR's, I own a 70-300 telephoto, 18-55 standard nikon lens and a fish eye and now this 50mm portrait lens, which completes the package. The lens does not comes with a motorized automatic focus and so is sensitive enough to through the picture of focus so mind that you ensure the frame is in focus. I would recommend using eye-piece over live view feature, it helps ensuring crisp picture...... long story short.... must buy lens, awesome for portrait photography. The depth of field could be controlled by setting the aperture, you will be amazed to see that the DoF changes dramatically just by setting aperture, so get the lens and start shooting, I have posted few customer provided images, so please chck them to see the fantabulous results...... enjoy clicking

I really enjoy this lens. The large aperture is wonderful. However the lens has no motor in it, so on the Nikon D500 and the D40 there is no auto focus available. I do not know if it will work on other Nikon cameras; these are the only two I have tried it with.

At this price, and with the right camera body, you can't go wrong with this lens. Purchased originally for use on my D70, I now use it on my newer D90. It has proven indispensable in low-light situations, and makes for a very good portrait lens on APS-C sensor bodies. Build quality is extremely solid, and the front glass is recessed which keeps it protected. The size and weight are almost insignificant when attached to the camera body - I can pop this on my D90, throw it over my shoulder, and walk around all day, barely noticing it's there. f/1.8 produces very usable shots, with very shallow DOF.

Be aware:

* If you are shooting with a lower-end camera body (D40, D60, D5000), this lens will work, but without auto-focus - and focusing manually at f/1.8 on a body with a crop-frame sensor is quite a challenge.

* If you are shooting any APS-C body (D40, D60, D5000, D70, D80, D90, D300), the crop-factor of the sensor size will yield an effective 75mm focal length. This is fine for outdoor shots, but it's a little too tight for indoor shooting.

For both of the above situations, I would recommend the Nikon 35mm f/1.8G AF-S DX Lens for Nikon Digital SLR Cameras lens over this 50mm (I own both). The 35mm is more expensive, intended for crop-frame bodies only, slightly larger, and of lesser build quality. However, it's still a great lens, and has a much more usable focal length for indoor shooting.

I purchased this lens for two reasons, the first to gain depth of field on close up subjects and the second to have a useful low light lens. It succeeds on both counts! I have tested it in a few different environments including outdoors at night and in music venues. If there is a limited out of light you can take great pictures without the use of a flash or tripod as the F1.8 lets in more than enough light. I almost got away without a tripod on a low lit street at night but there was a slight hint of shake in very poorly lit areas. I bought it mainly for concerts where I can use this without a flash and it works perfectly.
When wanting to do close up sharp photographs of specific subjects, again this lens performs well making the subject sharp and stand out from the rest of the image.
You wouldn't want this lens just for day to day photography as it is limited without the zoom but this is not what you would buy it for. It is compact and light and very easy to slip into your case for when you need to switch it over for those specific events or one off shots that are perfect for this lens.
Very happy

I bought this after it was recommended to me by a friend. It is a very fast lens and great for portrait photography! I will warn you though that you will want to step down to f2.2 as the f1.8 can be a little soft. It can also be a little too tight on a DX camera for indoor photography (you'll have to have room to back up). Overall, it is a great lens and a steal at this price!

I use this for portraits and food photography. This is a sharp lens and I personally like the 50mm focal length on the APS sized sensors. I have owned this lens before (traded it in - big mistake!) - so I was pretty sure of what I was getting. Check out dessertpro dot blogspot dot com for sample pictures.

Takes beautiful portrait shots when it's focused correctly. It can be a bit fussy. I'm still learning/playing with this lens, so maybe I'll get more consistent results once I have more experience with it. The great thing about digital photography is not having to pay for any wasted film from experimenting! Where I've been frustrated with the blurry shots, I'm super pleased with the ones that have turned out. It took some wonderful low-light shots at Christmas. This lens is very, very flattering on the faces of my kids. :)

This is a good lense , I like the output.
Only difficulty is you need to move back and forth while taking picture as its only 50mm but I'm use to it.
