A must have lens., Thursday, 01 January 2009 If you are willing to spend more money you may want to look into the Nikon 35mm or Sigma 30mm f1.4 especially if you are using a DX camera body. The 30mm will get you closer to what a 50mm lens would be on a FX body. It's also a good learning tool, there is nothing like a prime lens to teach you how to frame an image. All in all a perfect match for my D90. With the high ISO capability of the D90 I'm able to stop the lens down to around f4 even in low light and get great shots. The ability to open the lens up even more when needed is just icing on the cake.

Fantastic, Wednesday, 24 December 2008 Downsides? Your zoom is your feet. It's not an f1.4? (that's a stretch downside for those pessimists who need more than one downside). Oh yeah, it's around $100, which pretty much makes it an exceptional lens for the price.

If you will be focusing manually, beware!, Wednesday, 24 December 2008 Having said all that, I have to mention that in a different situation, this a fine quality lens (and thus the four-star rating). In available light with non-moving subjects, like portraits, museums, etc., or anything in a more controllable environment, it does a fine job. So the bottom line is: give careful consideration to how you will be using this lens before you make the purchase.

Best purchase of the year!, Friday, 19 December 2008 If you are prepared to move around, back up and go forward to get the shot then this is the lens for you. It takes beautiful portraits and worked well in some very snowy conditions. I would definitely recommend this lens! Enjoy!

Best Hundred bucks I ever spent, Tuesday, 16 December 2008 I've had the lens for about a week now, and it is fast becoming my favorite lens to use with my Nikon D200. (I also have a 18 - 135 f3.5 and a 70 - 300 VR f 4.5). It's low light capabilities, fast AF and fantastic bokeh make this an excelent portrait lens. Considering the price, every Nikon SLR and DSLR owner should have one of these lenses.

Description is not accurate. Will not work on Niko, Monday, 15 December 2008 The Nikon DX-60 does not have an onboard servo to auto-focus the lens but instead depends on the servo being on the lens. Since this lens does not have an onboard servo, the auto-focus will not work on Nikon DX60's. I would assume this to be true of the other DX model cameras that do not have onboard servos such as the DX-60. Amazon needs to clarify which models this will auto focus with.

Amazing and affordable lens!, Saturday, 13 December 2008 Pros: 1. Great in low light situations 2. Very sharp pictures 3. Fast (f/1.8) 4. Great for portraits 5. Light weight 6. Less than $100! 7. Excellent lens to learn on! Cons: 1. Auto focus can be a little slow 2. 75mm equivalent (given 1.5x multiplier on D70s)

Brilliant lens - but sometimes finicky, Thursday, 11 December 2008 After some experience and experimentation, I found that my sample was quite soft at 1.8 and the DOF was so shallow that the picture looked odd - for instance the tip of a subject's nose might be in focus but the eyes were blurry. Eventually I learned to step it down to 2.5 or more. I started getting some amazing, fantastic photos. I still find it finicky - quite often with the lighting and subject it produces mediocre photos - and my 18-200 VR is much more reliable in that it will produce a good photo in almost all circumstances. But the 18-200 almost never comes up with the kind of stunning, almost shocking picture that you can't stop staring at. My 50mm/1.8 does that every once in a while when the stars are aligned.
