I have a D300 and my results with this lens are quite positive, let me tell you. My model will take nice pictures with ANYTHING! All the Nikon DX series are awesome, powerful cameras. The 55-200 took nice snapshots of my child moving about in a dimly lit room with a flash, and the result looks better than any point & shoot camera.

I am not shocked at people discounting this nice zoom lens because it isnt a 200mm [...] fancy portriat lens, or is it simply because it isn't the more favorable VR model. Awww No VM? Think of it this way, No VM means less internal parts to break. I have seen inspiring, professional results using the basic D40 kit.

The idea is that you buy the accessories that are right for you. It's what you want, not what they want. You don't have to spend top dollar to achive beautiful results.

The 55-200mm lens compliments any DX series camera. If you have your lighting and your composition set, you are good to go and you need not worry about taking less than great pictures. You can even achieve even more amazing results with this 55-200m lens using 52mm filters, and when editing in photoshop.

It is a compact and lightweight zoom.

It is affordable. A retail value of 250.00, it's a deal for [...] but don't let the cheap price translate as a cheap lens, or that you will get cheap results with the 55-200. Dont let the lens snobs scare you. You will take nice pictures with this camera.

but go ahead buy the 55-200mm VS for a hundred dollars more if it makes you feel better!

The lens while received proved to be defective. Bad contacts cause totally unacceptable irregular performance.

The lens pictured on the website page when I originally ordered is not the lens Amazon sent. Nor was its replacement, despite repeated e-mails over nearly a month pointing out the discrepancy. All they've done is replace the web page photo in the last few days. I am still waiting for Amazon to send the lens pictured when I first ordered.

Yes, the lens is sharp, but this is pretty much the only positive thing. Speed is okay and okay, you have to consider the price...
After using this lens for a while, I realized that the pictures are simply less vivid. Comparing pictures from this lens with other lenses on the same camera (D80) shows a clear difference - the pictures look merely washed out and have less vivid colors. Despite all adjustments and testing, the pictures appear of much less quality if compared in a slide show...
Okay, the price is great but who wants to have second class pictures...
For me - unusable and not (absolutely not) worth the money.
During the first few weeks of usage, I was actually satisfied. It took some time to find out that the difference is in the color quality. I then did a test and compared pictures by putting them together in a slide show.
If you have this lens, try it out and make this test - you will be disappointed - drastic difference...

I'm new to the Digital SLR World. Decided to try this for fun and as a new type of stress relief. I've only used point and shoot cameras in the past. Was concerned about the potential for shaky pictures when I was reviewing dSLR cameras and lens; and I was greatly surprised with what I experienced with my first shots. Shots with this lens and my new Nikon D40 came out clean and sharp. Shots were taken without a tripod. I agree with other reviews for you to save your money and get this lens over the VR version. I found this lens easy to use, and if gave great shots for very small subjects (i.e. toy poodles) up to 20 feet away. This lens is a great companion to the 18-55mm lens.

Fantastic Product - I believe that this lens is perfect whether you are a professional or not. You do not need to spend extra for the vibration control lens - you dont need it - I took pictures from a regular SLR for years with a lens of the same quality - it still works great.
This lens is just as easy to use as the standard lens that comes with the unit.
I recommend this lens as a great buy.

I am loving my new lens. Many of my pictures turn out beautiful and I am having so much fun with my camera. This is exactly what I wanted as I enjoy taking close-up pictures of children, animals, scenes, etc. This was an excellent buy for me.

This lens is great for my amateur photography. Only complaint is that the shutter speed is a little slower than I would like, but still takes amazingly clear photos.
