Overview

The EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM is the professional photographers’ workhorse telephoto zoom lens. Using Fluorite to improve image quality, it has a rugged durable design and 4-stop Image Stabilizer Improving upon one of the most celebrated lenses in the Canon EF line is no easy feat, but Canon has done just that. The all-new EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM increases the speed, performance and optical quality of the EF 70-200 f/2.8L IS USM while maintaining all of the characteristics that have made it a legend for professionals and advanced amateurs alike. The EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM features one fluorite and five UD elements for increased optical quality and reduced chromatic aberration. It has a minimum focusing distance of 1.2m/3.9 ft. at all zoom settings, which is useful for photographers in smaller spaces trying to get closer to a subject. It features a next-generation Optical Image Stabilizer, providing up to 4 stops of correction at all focal lengths. And as with all L-series lenses, the EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM is dust- and moisture-resistant and designed for use in the challenging environments typical of rigorous professional use.

L series Quality

As the most popular lens of many professional photographers, the EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM matches Canon's highest standards of L-series optics, build quality, reliability and operability. An improved robust construction includes dust and moisture resistant seals to protect against harshest weather conditions.

Fast aperture

With a fast /2.8 aperture shooting in low light conditions is possible. This high speed aperture can also be used to ensure a shallow depth of field making the subject stand out against a cluttered background.

Image Stabilizer

Featuring Canon’s 4-stop Image Stabilizer (IS), making the lens ideal for low light conditions when a tripod can’t be used. The Image Stabilizer system allows shutter speeds of up to 4 stops slower than normal to be used without causing image blur.

Fluorite and Ultra low dispersion (UD) lens element for the highest image quality

Featuring a lens element made from Canon’s unique high performance Fluorite, chromatic aberration is minimised. As well as the use of Fluorite, 5 UD elements are also used to ensure excellent image quality, high contrast and natural colour reproduction throughout the zoom range.

Beautiful background blur with 8 blade circular aperture

Thanks to a circular 8 bladed aperture, beautiful background bokeh is possible, isolating subjects at wide apertures.

Fast silent auto focus

Using a ring type USM (Ultrasonic Motor) and new AF algorithm to drive the high speed auto focus with ultra quiet operation. Full time mechanical manual focus override is also available without having to switch out of AF. The minimum focusing distance has been reduced to 1.2m allowing photographers to stand closer to the action.

Accessories

The lens is supplied as standard with the ET-87 lens hood to prevent glare affecting images, as well as a removable tripod mount and the LZ1326 soft case for easy transport.

I have the Mark5 D2 with the 24-70L and this was my original purchase. I am not too happy with the 24-70 L it lacks sharpness and color if I am any distance other then 3ft from my subject. After receiving and shooting a couple of shots with the 70-200 I finally have a working combination....spectacular color and sharpness through out. I am going to send my 24-70 to canon for inspection. I think it should operate the same. This lens was a whole lot of money but my pics just went up 10 notches. Get and you wont regret it .... Mine is USM.

Hands down my best lens purchase ever

I have owned the 24-70, 70-200 f4 IS, 24-105, 100-400, 50 1.4 and the 10-22

This is by far the best money I have ever spent on a lens. The colors are beautiful and amore importantly fully accurate. Sharpness and focusing speed is phenomenal. This will be my bread winner for the foreseeable future. Congratulations Canon!

I've had this lens for some time now and continue to be amazed by the razor sharp, color perfect images it renders. I'm not going to discuss all the pros as they are numerous and the only "con" would be weight and even that is perfectly balanced. I simply wanted to pay tribute to Canon for making a superb lens. It is so much sharper than my 17-40 L series lens as to be incomparable in my mind. It's quite expensive but I've never regretted its cost. It utterly re-defines "excellence" in my mind.

I originally bought this lens for my trip to Peru. I worked out perfectly. We hiked through the mountains for days, Machu Picchu, and then down to the jungle of Puerto Maldonado. This lens came in handy for distant wildlife shots, primarily why I bought it, and for closeup portrait shots of people. The depth of field range is fantastic and the photos look amazing. I'm not a professional photographer but I am very glad that I purchased this lens. I feel I have a lens that will help me grow my skills as a photographer and opens up a wider range of shots. Just today I was shooting distant shots of the Transformers 3 movie set action. Look me up on flickr and see if you like the shots. My flickr name is mattsellars.

The only downside I have found to this lens is the price and it was a bit heavy for carrying 3 days through the Peruvian mountains but my arms look much better for it :-)

Superb telephoto zoom.

I have to admit that this lens IS expensive. But at the moment you see what it can do, you instantly forget how much you paid for it. This lens IS REALLY AWESOME.
