Overview

Large-aperture telephoto L lens with a camera shake correction function, which is best suited to motor sports photography Developed as a successor to the EF500mm f/4.5L USM. The maximum aperture F value is set to F4 for large aperture and a fluorite lens and two UD lenses are used in the optical system to assure very high picture quality. This lens has also a protection glass and a rear filter as standard, which are included in the number of lenses. The camera shake correction has an effect of approx. two stops* in terms of shutter speed. This lens has also "camera shake correction mode 2" which corrects shaking of the viewfinder image when, for example, shooting a moving object, and a tripod can be used with the camera shake correction function ON. High-speed autofocusing is achieved by the weight reduction of the group of focusing lenses and improvement of the autofocusing drive algorithm. A new AF stop function, which stops autofocusing temporarily, is adopted. Manual focusing is performed mechanically to save power. Main components are made of a magnesium alloy to reduce the weight of the lens, including the optical system, making it much lighter than conventional lenses. Rubber parts are used as mount and switch components to achieve excellent dust- and drip-proofness. The tripod mount can be removed, and the drop-in filter 52 (standard), carbon fiber hood, and suitcase-type lens case are designed to be easy to use.

*: Based on the "1/focal length" second which is a yardstick to indicate the limit for camera shake prevention

Buying a 500mm is always a commitment, weather you are a professional or not. You really got to need the extra 100mm for deciding to go for the 500mm instead of a considerably cheaper 100-400. However, once you get it, you realized why prime telephotos are so unique.
1) Image quality: You will be amazed by the difference between a 500mm and a 100-400 or even a 400f/4 + extender.
2) Depth of field: f/4 at 500mm produces a very shallow depth of field, it enables you to reveal your subject on a complete blurry background.
3) IS: I've been able to use it handheld in quite a few situations where something happened and I wasn't quite ready (tripod) and it worked flawlessly.
4) Weight: The reason why I went for the 500mm instead of the 600mm is clearly weight. The 500mm is (at least for me) clearly manageable for a hike on my shoulder (or backpack) but the 600mm is not. Even if the difference between those two lenses is not that huge, it DOES makes a difference.
5) Weather sealing: rain ? who cares ? just focus on the subject, the lens is taking care of the rest.
6) Good with TC: I'm using it 80% of the time with a X1.4 II and it works very well. We do loose a bit of sharpness (despite some people are saying), it is noticeable but the result is still really clean.

I use this lens with a GITZO 3540 tripod, a Markins M20 ballhead and a Wimberley Sidekick, only for wildlife phography.

Length:: 2:05 MinsI wanted to show this lens being unboxed. The video will show the contents of this lens package, plus a comparison shot between this lens and the Canon 300mm f/4L IS.

OVERALL PERFORMANCE: This is an awesome lens, expensive but worth every penny. I've done handheld shots at 1/100 secs and were able to produce very sharp keepers, wide open. The image stabilization is the best of Canon's lens line up. I've taken shots in wildlife sanctuaries under the heat of the sun and wet weather -- this lens continues on. I've uploaded some of the images on the customer gallery.

PICTURE QUALITY: One of the sharpest lenses I've used, especially with your subject distance is within 10 meters. I often do bird photography and you can see the veins of these birds!

EASE OF USE: If you have used L class lenses before that have image stabilization, this is no problem. Otherwise, you'll want to learn about the differences between the two modes.
