Lens Summary

Overview

The new Nikkor 500mm f/4 ED AF-S VR

Popular super telephoto lens that offers an excellent combination of Focal length and handling. A new optical design delivers crisp, high Contrast images and features ultra quiet Autofocus performance, Vibration Reduction II to combat the effect of Camera shake at slow shutter speeds, and practical close focusing capabilities. Designed for digital, this lens includes a Nano Crystal Coating, ED glass and rounded diaphragm blades to produce images full of detail with excellent out of focus characteristics.

  • Wildlife Super fast
  • Vibration reduction
  • NANO CRYSTAL coat
  • 3ED Elements
The 500mm f/4 lens offers an excellent 'reach-to-weight ratio'. Thanks in large part to the f/4 maximum aperture, the size and weight of the front element can be kept comparatively smaller.
The 500mm f/4 is the lens choice for those who need to cover distances to find thier subject, and and ideal companion when venturing across country to shoot wildlife, for example.

I do not own this lens (I wish I did) but used it at a Nikon Pro "Promotional" day. It is a shame that I did not ask for the images of the card as I could have shown them here. But this lens was what you would expect for a £5000 + lens. It is sharp and the AF is fast, on the day I used it the light was good and the lenses as expected were on very sturdy tripods so the shutter was fast and there was no Blur, so the VR was not really fully tested. But as you would need a tripod built of cast iron to hold this any way then really it was only the light that could make the difference with the VR.

I am a Nikon man so as very happy that Nikon have decided to start to manufacture this and the 400mm and 600mm with the VR. It has been a long time coming and Canon have had this for a while now.

I liked the lens and would sell my current (Non VR) 500mm for this one.
