DESCRIPTION SPECIFICATIONS

The AT-X 100 PRO D is a new macro lens capable of life-sized (1:1) reproduction at 11.8 in. (30 cm). The lens' multi-Coating have been re-engineered to match the highly reflective silicon based CCD and CMOS sensors in today's digital SLR cameras. This lens gives the best of both worlds because optics still give full coverage and excellent sharpness on 35mm film. A macro lens that can handle both the digital and film worlds with ease.

The AT-X 100 PRO D also has a very convenient focus limiter switch that can lock the focus out of the closes focus making it focus faster when used as a moderate telephoto lens that is excellent portraits as well.

Other features of the AT-X 100 PRO D are:

Tokina One Touch Focus Clutch Mechanism for fast easy switching between manual and Auto focus.

55mm non-rotating filter thread for use with macro ring flashes and special effects filters.

The AT-X 100 PRO D also comes with a deep bayonet mounted lens hood.

Focal length-wise this is a more traditional offering from Tokina and will be equally at home on both DSLR and SLR, as it still gives full coverage and excellent sharpness.
Tokina lenses tend to be defined by solid build quality but have marginally slower and noisier AF performance that the opposition, and that's certainly the case here. It's just that some of the other lenses we have tested go about there business quicker and quieter.
A focus limiter is on offer, as are some more traditional lens features including a depth-of-field scale and focusing window. Manual focusing can be selected easily as well, by the push / pull focusing collar. Optically, the Tokina puts in a very strong performance around the central apertures. At f/8 and f/11 there's little to choose between center and edge definition.
Results are a little less consistent at the extremes of the aperture range, but all optical nasties are very well controlled.

I was looking for a macro lens (my first), I was considering Sigma 105mm and tamron 90mm all of them are good choices, but I get better price on this Tokina, The image quality is excellent, It's very sensitive to movement, you have to use a tripode o monopode, even use it on manual mode to catch good pictures. It says that is 2.8 but is 2.8 only when the subjetc is far away. if your subject is closer like 30 centimeters it becomes 4 o 4.5 (aperture). Good Color, very Sharp and a nice little dark buke. The autofocus is slow, but you have to be patient on this kind of pictures. I took some portraints and look great very good.

I purchased this lens and was initially very happy with it. However, within 30 days of light use I started to ge EE errors on my Nikon. So unfortunately I am not very happy with this purchase. I am looking at replacing it with a Nikon lense now.

This is my first macro lens. I am very satisfied with the results. It does not have AF-S/HSM, but in macro auto focus performance/type is not very important. Optical and build quality is excellent. It does not have VR, but for macro you will need tripod or monopod in most cases anyway. VR would help if you use it as a short-telephoto, but it is not as practical as a good 70-200mm/f2.8 zoom lens. Very reasonably priced.

For only half the price of Nikon 105mm, this lens is an amazing
bargain!
It is super-sharp, renders great colors, autofocus is very smooth and
precise. I am very impressed with the manufacturing, too.
Highly recommended.

For the price this is a remarkable lens. I really like the focus and the sharpness. I use it on a D200 and experienced great results. A must for the price conscience consumer who wants all the quality he can get for his bucks.

Tokina has earned ample praise as one of the best independent lens manufacturers for decades. Judging from a glowing review I have seen for this 100mm lens in the January, 2006 issue of Shutterbug magazine, then I have no doubt that this new macro lens is one of the finest lenses currently available from Tokina. Indeed, it may be a better performer than the medium telephoto lenses manufactured by both Canon and Nikon, which is an apt comparison since this lens is available only in their lens mounts. The review I read said that the lens performed well wide open, but especially in the range from f4 and below, with excellent Contrast and Resolution. The reviewer also praised the lens's durable all metal construction, lens coatings and optical design. Of course the best proof of this lens's quality is in the images it produces, which I thought were quite spectacular, including a closeup of a butterfly on a flower at a magnification ratio of nearly 1:1 without an extension tube. Those searching for a superb medium telephoto macro lens for both their Nikon digital and film SLR cameras should give this new Tokina lens ample consideration.
