Taking portrait photographs is much different than any other type of photos.
Unlike landscape shots or studio shots, you now don't have full control over the
way the picture comes out. Now you are in a collaboration with the person you
are taking a photo of. The way the model poses and how their facial expressions
look is going to have a big impact on your shots. This article will give you
some tips to make this much easier.
To be successful when you take shots of people, you need primarily two
different things: some patience and an ability to work well with people. A lot
of different things come to play when taking shots of people. Some people are
different than others and you'll never have an exact experience. Models can be
short tempered, can get tired very quick, and be obsessed with eating all the
time. Also, some people will be very reserved and timid when taking photos.
There is just too much to worry about. Your main goal should be one thing: to
get your model as calm and used to you as possible.
Other than this, your other main goal in taking portrait shots should be to
get the best possible shot of your model as possible. What you should aim for is
capturing their personality on film. Find out their best traits of their
personality and try to highlight those in the way you pose them and set the
lighting.
Most photographers go for the usual, canned pleasing and happy look for
portrait shots. The model is usually always smiling. This is very generic and do
not feel constricted to this. Try other styles. See how a frown or a smirk
works.
Overall, again a very important aspect of portraits is keeping the model
calm. A nervous or anxious model will make your shot bad. Their expressions will
be visible when the shot is taken.
