I have been looking at the Samsung GX-20 and it almost looks to good to be true for the price. On Amazon they are selling this body for ($1200)(£649). This seems a good buy for the spec! I know megapixels are not the only thing to consider but the whole package seems a fantastic buy for the price.

The biggest issue for me is the lens avalibility and range. I am trying to find it I can get one on demo, but I think I will be very lucky to get that. So does anyone out there have one yet and can give me an overview.

What has been putting me off if that if this is as a good a buy as it looks then why has not everyone been ordering one...or have they and just not said becaue they thing that because is a Samsung then it is not a proper camera?

your thoughts please..... Shocked

HI Issy,

I get the feeling from your post that you are concerned that the Samsung might be considered to be a lesser DSLR just because of the name? But I can see what you mean in one way as the spec list for this DSLR is almost unbelievable for the price. I am sure once people have spec time with it and there are some decent reviews posted around the web you will get a better view to whether it is worth the money or not.

Samsung will be trying hard to break in to the market so they might be selling the GX-20 with very little profit to get there name and quality more widely known to the photography world.

If i have the $1000 would I buy it......probably not...or not yet any way.

Let us know what you decide.

I suppose you pays your money and takes your choice. I see the GX-20 takes a Pentax fit lens, so you're not too restricted with lens choice. Pentax lenses tend to be a little pricey but the third party lens manufacturers provide reasonable coverage of the range, so I wouldn't worry too much about it.

As for the name, I wouldn't worry about it at all. If the camera fits the bill and your purse, go for it.

I think the main problem for me is the history of such a manufacture. When you buy Nikon or Canon you buy in to a brand that has history and you know you have a huge choice of lenses and accessories. The GX-20 might be ok if you want to stick to relatively common lenses and accessories. But if you want really choose then don't but it and go for a Canon or Nikon and have a good feeling about the longevity of you kit.

just my view
John.

HI,

Jeff I was not saying Pentax was a new comer to the DSLR market, it was Samsung I was talking about. Pentax have a large and well respected lens range.

Just thought I would clear this up

I did not want to start a war of words on what manufacture is better than another,  I can go to other forums to get that. I just wanted your view on if this is a good deal or not. I know I would be taking a leap of Faith as this is not one of the top leaders in the DSLR market, but still Samsung are a huge company and I am sure there product will match up with most other DSLR's.

So because of this price it has made me think that may be the larger DSLR manufactures are perhaps charging to much for there products and Samsung have been more realistic about the price. But I have been reading some more about it and I am being drawn more to buying one. Would still like to get my hands on one first. Also this would not be  directly replacing my current Canon, but my 1DmkII is now getting a little older and I have the funds to buy more kit and this looks like an intresting direction.

thanks
